About Glass for Good

Shares, Inc. employees sorting glass

Glass for Good is a division of Shares, Inc., which is a private not-for-profit agency that provides job and basic life skills training for adults with developmental disabilities. The disabilities of our associates range from developmental disabilities, including Down syndrome, cerebral palsy, autism and seizure disorders, to persons with mental illness, physical, hearing or other health impairments. Glass for Good provides a work setting that emphasizes productivity, safety and independence, while building self-sufficiency through the improvement of social and work skills.

Through the Glass for Good / glass rock program, our associates learn the importance of recycling glass, while earning a wage for packaging the recycled glass material. Since the glass rock product is packaged by the pound, our associates also learn some basic math skills. They use special containers that hold 1 pound of glass and they fill 1, 3, 5, and 10 pound bags. Packages greater than 10 lbs. are also offered. The glass rock is tumbled to eliminate its sharp edges, making it safe and easy to handle, though our associates do still wear gloves for added protection.

Along with our glass rock / glass recycling program, Shares, Inc. provides additional services to our customers that include light manufacturing and assembly, kitting, other types of packaging, collation services and fulfillment services for a variety of products. Any type of work that requires manual handling is a perfect fit for our agency, because those types of tasks can easily be broken down into steps that can be adapted to the various abilities of our associates.
